Built 250 years ago as a farmhouse, the Machrie became a hotel at the turn of the century. With a choice of sea or mountain views from every room, the natural beauty of the Island is around you at every moment.

Many of our guests are here to play golf on our famous links course – a pleasure and a challenge which always lives up to expectation.
We're also the ideal base for individuals, couples or families here to make the most of the island's many activities, including walking, fishing, biking and horse-riding.
Whisky enthusiasts stay with us while they tour the distilleries, getting to know the home of Laphroaig, Bowmore and the five other single malts that come from Islay, as well as one from Jura.
The Machrie often hosts meetings and events for companies and societies, including golfing groups. Our main function room can hold up to 150 people.

Finally, we've got a reputation for putting on a good night, Scottish-style, including hosting wedding receptions and stag parties. And should the bride and groom want to escape the crowd, we can arrange an intimate meal for two.

Our restaurant is a favourite not only with our guests, but also with visitors to and residents of the island. It's an unmissable part of any trip to Islay, and everyone tells us how much they've enjoyed eating there.

Our reputation rests on a blend of fine local produce – including Islay beef and lamb, lobster, crab, scallops and prawns – and thoughtful preparation. The hotel's cellar is a feature too. As well as Islay's famous single malts, we have a selection of top-quality wines and spirits from around the world.

Machrie Golf Course

There are many reasons why you have to come and play the Machrie Golf Links, not least to discover why so many golfers find it a bewitching and exalting experience.

Laid out in 1891 by pioneering designer Willie Campbell, and respected among golfing cognoscenti, The Machrie is now getting a wider name for itself as one of the world's top links courses.

When Campbell first saw the land being proposed for the course, he said it was ‘the best ground for a golf course that I have ever had the pleasure of viewing.' In fact, apart from some minor modifications, this challenging course has changed little in over 100 years, and has a fascinating history.

At 6250 yards long, we like to think of the Machrie course as a subtle beast with a sense of humour. In the natural sand dunes lurk its wicked teeth, and a capricious temperament sometimes provoked by winds of varied strengths and direction.
